The Ups and Downs of Social Networking with everything in between
Hi I have made this blog to voice my opinion on what I really think about social networking and all the things people have been talking about like the things we have all looked at. The things I am referring too is the PBS video that we watched, the Article how Obama really did it and the rest of the articles that we have taken a look at.
The first thing I’m going to talk about was the PBS video about all of the stories about the kids within Chatom New Jersey . The first thing I have to say no offense to New Jersey or anyone from there but it is one of the most boring places on the planet. I am really not surprised to hear that they have all the kids in there town doing nothing but staying on the computer because there is nothing to do there. Besides that there were a number of cases of children having problems on the internet and there parents finding out about it. Well the first few stories I have to say are parents who aren’t necessarily taking a large interest in their kids. I don’t mean to judge and I have no idea what it would feel like to be like one of those parents but this is just what I got out of it. The first story with the girl who was posting pictures of herself on MySpace.com as a different person. I seriously think people can find a different way to solve their problems rather than creating a alternate persona on the internet in order to get people to like you. There is a point of going over board and I think this is going way over board to be accepted. I know kids can be some of the most cruel, nasty and mean creatures on the planet but creating a virtual reality in order to get acceptance in order to get people to like you is just insanity that’s not how life or the real world works. The pictures in themselves I think weren’t that bad but the way the parents let her continue with that I feel was feeding into behavior and not helping her understand what’s going on in the real world. The next thing was the young boy who committed suicide. I thought this was a tragedy what happened to this child and to anyone else child this has happened to. The only thing was that didn’t his parents get any of the signs when he was sending with all of the bullying in school. Another this is what parent lets their 7th grader go on the internet and not know what is going on. I mean you can let your child live there lives but for you to let them be on the computer like that at such a young age is just asking for trouble. All I’ am saying is that you have to maintain a certain amount of responsibility as a parent to make sure that your child is doing ok. The last thing I am going to talk about is the mother who was way too into her children’s lives when they went onto the computer. She was talking about being afraid of stalkers she’s the stalker if anything. That lady thought way too much into things as if her kids didn’t know all of the dangers of the internet and everyone is out to get her kids. She wasn’t only way too into her own kids lives but she was into the communities ones as well with giving all of the parents in the neighborhood way too much information about their kids on personal stuff rather than focusing on what PTO’s were created for which is things about the school. She also did not think about her kids as well when she mentioned to everyone about the concert that had happened. The first if she thinks that this concert was bad then she would flip out about how bad some of these concerts can really get. Her son also had every right to be mad at her that was humiliating what she had put him through. There was also other ways she could have gotten that out to all of the parents I mean hasn’t this lady heard of anonymous email? All I am saying is that if used the right way social networking can be a great source and tool but these stories show that if adults want to get involved that have to find a reasonable median.
After this I took a look at the article How Obama Really Did It which I happened to think was a great article. I think his method of social networking was a perfect example of what it was created for. The reason for social networking is to get a point across to a certain selected group of people or person. His point was to advertise his campaign so people can understand what he was looking to do with all of his ideas. It also reminded voters to go out and do what he wanted them to do which is be proactive and go out and vote. He really proved his point and got his message across that everyone can go out to voice their opinions because this past election had one of the largest voting totals ever.
While looking at all of the social gaming articles I had mixed emotions about all of them. I myself play some videogames online like the basic games most people play like Call of Duty which is a war game and NFL Madden which is a football game. I think if someone loves to play these games in some of their free time then good for them because they are very fun especially while playing online. The thing is when there is a line being crossed while playing online. I think it is ok to have a completive spirit but it a little crazy to personally go after someone for beating you in a videogame. First most of the people you play you don’t even personally know and second it just a game for god sakes it was made for fun it’s not like a life or death situation. The only thing I am going to say is that playing these games is ok but you can’t take them too seriously.
I have to agree with everything that you wrote about. As I read all the articles and watched the PBS series I was thinking such similar things. I mean I do not agree with the whole living in New Jersey thing, but everything else I would agree with. The internet is a great resource and some parents are overly involved in every step their child is making. The Obama issue with using the internet to campaign is great! The internet is a great way to get an message across is a fast way. I liked the article and the message with it. The online virtual game I personally am against. I do not see any point in it. It just lets people live out a fantasy world that they so-called wish they were in, it is basically escaping from the real world. I could be wrong about that, but I am not in favor of it.
